Barbara A. Kohnert, age 77, of Winneconne passed away Monday morning, May 2, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh after a short illness. She was born November 3, 1938. Barbara enjoyed many activities including long time membership of the Optimist International Oshkosh Chapter, the American Legion Auxiliary, and volunteering at the Grand Opera House. For many years Barb has also been an election worker for the Village of Winneconne. Barbara is survived by her son Kurt and granddaughter Nicole Kohnert; her daughter Wendy Kohnert; a brother Richard (Kathleen) Frischmann; many nieces, nephews; and good friend, Gerald Weiss. Preceding Barbara in death was her husband Henry Carl Kohnert; and her parents Joseph and Dorothy Frischmann. Since 1988 Barbara has lived in Winneconne and found herself surrounded by many great neighbors and friends who always were available to lend a helping hand. She really took an interest in the feral cat population in her neighborhood and successfully live trapped and through neighborly help had them spay or neutered. Afterwards they were returned to the neighborhood and fed and cared for by her; breakfast, lunch, and supper every day, they were always there waiting for the ready hand out. Barbara was known to her friends as someone who always was in a good mood and with a smile on her face. Barbara will be celebrated at a funeral Mass on Thursday, May 5, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church 210 Pleasant Dr. Winneconne. Fr. Doug LeCaptain and Sr. Pam Biehl will be officiating. A visitation for family and friends will be on Thursday, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church. Burial in the Winneconne Cemetery will follow Mass with a return for lunch at St. Mary's Kaudy Hall afterward. Memorials in Barbara's name may be made to the Oshkosh Humane Society.
