Obituary

Guido Herman Stein, age 89, died, Friday, January 26, 2018, at Eden Meadows in Oshkosh. He was born December 29, 1928, in Duren, Germany. In 1941, after his schooling in Germany, he went to Krakau, Poland for 3 years to school. In 1944 Guido and his family moved to Czechoslovakia and in May 1945 walked to Cologne, Germany. In October 1956 he came to the United States and settled in Oshkosh where he worked for 6 years at Oshkosh Motor Truck. In 1961 Guido married Joan and they made their home in Oshkosh. In 1962 he went to work at Rockwell International, working there for 30 years until his retirement in 1992. Guido had a wood burning and painting business in Germany from 1946 until 1956, and after coming to America he continued it as a hobby. He also enjoyed riding and racing motorcycles in Germany and continued to enjoy riding in America. Since April 1965 Guido was a member of the Elks, where he served as a tiler and was presented officer of the year award in 2004-2005. He was also a member of the Great Pyrenees Club of America since 1974. Guido was greatly loved and will be dearly missed by: a daughter and two sons-in-law, Lynn and John Rogers, of Winneconne; John Achterberg, of Fisk; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Preceding Guido in death were his parents; his wife, Joan; a daughter, Sharon Achterberg; and a sister, Carol. A visitation for family and friends will be on Thursday, February 1, 2018, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Mueller Funeral Home 904 E. Main St. Winneconne. A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Ritchie Cole officiating. An Elks service will follow. Burial will be in the Winneconne Cemetery on Friday, February 2. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oshkosh Humane Society. Guido's family would like to thank the staffs of Eden Meadows and Generations Hospice for their wonderful care, and for making it possible for him to ride in the sidecar of a Harley this past fall; he was smiles from ear to ear.
