James E. "Jim" Ruskaup, age 83, of Winneconne, passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, May 14, 2026. He was born on January 1, 1943, in Indianapolis, Indiana, the son of William and Helen (Bigelow) Ruskaup. On June 20, 1964, he married the love of his life, Kay Short.
Jim served in the Army Reserve, where he received the Soldier’s Medal for heroism in recognition of his courageous rescue of people trapped in a burning vehicle, an act that reflected the lifelong spirit of service and helping others that defined him. Throughout his life, he held many different roles and took pride in serving his community. Over the years, he worked as a funeral director, office manager, welder, EMT, and school bus driver. He also volunteered with the Brown Deer Fire Department for more than 20 years.
He enjoyed woodworking, camping, and spending time with family. He was a member of Lord of the Lakes Lutheran Church and Masonic Lodge 186 F&AM.
He is survived by his wife, Kay; his children, Glenn Ruskaup, Deanna (Jeff) Mielke, and Rebecca (Chad) Lapora; and seven grandchildren, Mikaela, Ryan, Rachel, Sam, Sara, Zach, and Jasmine.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 22, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at Lord of the Lakes Lutheran Church, with Rev. Kevin Heffernan officiating. Visitation will be held at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. A memorial has been established.
