Obituary

Janet Oline Schettl (Challoner) passed away on December 9, 2025, at Bethel Home in Oshkosh, Wi. She was born in Omro, Wi. on June 9, 1935, to Herbert and Oline Challoner.

She attended school in the city of Omro, graduating from high school in 1953. She worked part time at the Omro Theatre and the Omro Lumber Company between 1951 to 1954. In 1953 she also began working in Oshkosh and met Richard Schettl. They were married on August 31, 1957, at St. Peter Catholic Church in Oshkosh, Wi. Janet and Richard made their home in Janet’s family residence along with Janet’s mother Oline. Richard and Janet were longtime parishioners at St. Mary Catholic Church in Omro.

Janet began working for the city of Omro in 1967 as the Deputy Clerk-Treasurer and continued to work for the City of Omro in additional roles of Clerk-Treasurer and City Administrator until she retired at the age of 65.

Janet was active in many Omro community organizations including the Omro Area Development Corporation, Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis, Women’s Service League, Community Development Authority and the Omro Area Historical Society. Along with her husband Richard, they were active in organizing the Omro Chamber of Commerce annual Duck Race held each summer as part of the city’s Fourth of July celebration.

Janet was a very active and hard-working person. She enjoyed dancing with her husband Richard, reading, walking with her friends, and being outdoors.

Janet is survived by her son, Randal (Mary) Schettl; granddaughter, Samantha Schettl; brothers-in-law, Harold, Ronald (Diana) and Melvin (Gayle) Schettl; sister-in-law, Diane (Steve) Wilsey. She is further survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Janet was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Schettl; brother, Raymond (Nadine) Challoner; sister, Marjorie (Richard) Nekoli; in-laws, Ferdinand and Evelyn Schettl, brothers-in-law, Earl and Herbert (Mildred) Schettl; sister-in-law, Betty Schettl.

A private funeral service will be held for Janet. A public visitation will be held at Mueller Funeral Home, 904 E. Main St. Winneconne, WI 54986 on Friday, December 19, 2025 from 10:30 am until 12:00 pm followed by burial at Omro Cemetery.
