Larry "Joe" Carpenter, age 73, of Oshkosh, died peacefully surrounded by his family, on Sunday, April 8, 2018, at The Waterford, after a year-long fight with brain cancer. He was born November 19, 1944, to the late Robert and Virginia (Lee) Carpenter. Larry served his country with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. On June 14, 1969, he married Linda Theisen in Port Washington. For many years Larry worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement. He had served as an officer with the local branch number 173 of the National Association of Letter Carriers, was a past board member of the Oshkosh Postal Employees Credit Union, and was a member of the Daugherty-Hamilton American Legion Post 234, Omro, and St. Raphael Catholic Church, Oshkosh. Larry enjoyed playing golf, traveling, and wood-carving. Larry is survived by his wife of 48 years, Linda Carpenter, of Oshkosh; three children, Laurie (Juan) Jackson, of Lexington, Kentucky; Kristen (Jeff) Freiberg, of Oak Creek; Scott Carpenter, of Oshkosh; grandchildren, Samantha Carpenter, Emma Carpenter, Sophie Carpenter, Kalie Freiberg, Michael Freiberg, Julia Freiberg; sisters and brothers, Jean Krings (Ron Coats), Jim (Sharon) Carpenter, Kathy (Mike) Miller, Greg Carpenter, Barbara (Stuart) Fink; in-laws, Donald (Nancy) Theisen, Michael (Jan) Theisen; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Along with his parents, Larry was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert Carpenter; in-laws, Gerald Krings, Kathleen Casper, and a niece, Karen Kay Halder. A visitation for family and friends will be on Thursday, April 12, 2018, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Mueller Funeral Home 904 E. Main St., Winneconne. A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Fr. Tom Long officiating. Burial with military honors will be on Friday, April 13 in the Rushford Cemetery.
