Obituary

Michael John Meyer (Duper), age 78, of Winneconne, WI, passed away on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at Bethel Home in Oshkosh, WI after battling cancer.

Mike was born June 15, 1947, in Oshkosh, WI, the son of the late John (Tige) and Margaret (Gavin) Meyer. Mike graduated from Winneconne High School and briefly attended the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. His life's work was caring for the mentally disabled at Winnebago Mental Health Institute. He always had a special place in his heart for those less fortunate.

On September 5, 1970, Mike married Joan Beatrice Mies at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Oshkosh, WI. They shared many great years together and were the proud parents of sons Kevin and Kyle. Mike was a life-long resident of Winneconne and had many great friends he had known his whole life. He was also a proud member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Mike's children and grandchildren were his greatest joy. Coaching baseball (with Hamlin Last) and watching them in their many activities and sports were Mike's favorite things to do. He was an eclectic collector and seller of rare and interesting antiques. If he wasn't at a ballgame, he could usually be found at an estate sale, auction, or rummage sale. He had an eye for items he thought might be valuable. Through his countless travels and transactions, he made many friends and had endless stories. Other activities Mike enjoyed: deer camp in City Point, talking about the old days in Winneconne, watching the purple martins in his backyard, going for a bike ride with his miniature poodle down to Marble Park, alley football every holiday with his high school buddies, fishing for bass with a silver minnow spoon and Uncle Josh pork rind trailer, "visiting" with anyone willing to have a conversation, 4th of July at the cottage in Lakewood, breakfast on Saturday mornings with Bobby Olkiewicz and the late Skip Thorpe, his Catholic faith, driving with the late Jimmy Coughlin around the state to find books for his collection, watching the Wolves, Brewers, Packers, and Badgers, coffee or dining with his family and friends, caring for his late cousin, Katherine (Ducky) Coughlin, and just lending a hand to anyone who needed it. He was always generous with his time and money.

Remaining to cherish Mike's memory are his loving wife of 55 years, Joan; children, Kevin (Kristin) and Kyle Meyer; four beloved grandchildren, Brayden, Kamden, Avilyn, and Ronin Meyer. Mike loved dogs and they loved him in return. Remi, Kona, and Tippy will miss Grandpa very much.

Preceding Mike in death were his parents, John (Tige) and Margaret (Gavin) Meyer; his sister, Marvel Meyer; and cousins, James Coughlin, Ducky Coughlin, and Marty Coughlin. We're sure he looks forward to seeing the family dogs that passed before him: Buttons, Missy, Lizzy, Sadie, Kasey, Zoey, Piper, Jade, Tico, and Tessa. They all loved Grandpa.

Visitation will be held 9-11a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Winneconne on Saturday, March 7th, 2026. A funeral service will begin at 11a.m. with a reception to follow at the Fin 'n' Feather in Winneconne. Private interment will take place at Winneconne Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank Heartland Hospice Care and all the wonderful people who cared for Mike during his illness. A special thank you to Rose Unser, Sister Pam, Deacon Paul, and Father Tom who all made many visits to the hospital and nursing home. Also, to the many friends who reached out or visited Mike, it meant a lot to him and the family.
