Richard E. Schallert, age 90, passed away at Ascension Mercy Medical Center on Monday, July 20, 2026. He was born to Ernest and Harriet (Anderson) Schallert on March 4, 1936, in Racine, Wisconsin.

Richard was a veteran, US Army & Army Reserves (E S7 SFC) and a Military Police and MI Analyst 450th S.I.D. USAR, Special Intelligence Detachment.

Richard earned a Master’s Degree of Teaching at Drake University and a Master’s Degree of Science at the University of Oregon. He also was director of education at the Des Moines Register & Tribune and worked for the State of Iowa Dept. of Public Instruction as well as the associate professor of business and finance for 20 years at Black Hawk Community College in Moline, Illinois.

Richard was a lifelong learner, teacher, global traveller and avid reader, at one point subscribing to several daily newspapers and various other publications. He read easily more than 1,000+ books and was always willing to discuss the news of the day. He was active in numerous service organizations, a charter member of Lord of the Lakes church, politically involved in local issues and spent many years volunteering at the Winneconne Thrift & Gift Shop.

Richard is survived by his wife, Mary Brefeld; his brother, R. Dale Schallert; children, Alice (Greg) Baldwin, Beth (Jerry) Webb, and Eric (Chanin) Schallert. Grandchildren are Steven (Jane) Baldwin; Josie (Deivid) Mariano; Lindze (Michael) Webb-Vieregge; Becca Webb and Alex (Madison) Webb; Matthew Schallert; Nathan Schallert and Emily Schallert; great-grandchildren Travis, Christopher and Miriam.

He also is survived by his devoted stepchildren Ann (Robert) Iosca; John Brefeld and step-grandchildren Anthony Iosca and Hayden Iosca.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service for Richard (Dick) will be held at Mueller Funeral Home (904 E Main St) on Thursday, July 30 at 11 a.m. A time of visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
