Obituary

Royal "Roy" Schmitt died peacefully at Ascension Mercy Hospital in Oshkosh on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, after a short illness. He was born July 26, 1939, in Milwaukee to Ludwig and Adeline Schmitt, graduating from North Division High School in Milwaukee in 1957. Roy worked at Lakeside Bridge and Steel for ten years as a welder and then at Pabst Brewery until retirement in 1995. Roy worked on city delivery and later in the government cellars at Pabst.

In 1969 he married Kathleen Heffernan in Two Rivers. They have two children, William (Angela) of West Bend and Julie (Adam) Goodnature of Johnson Creek; and four grandchildren, Hailey and Hunter Schmitt, Skyler Scheinkoenig, and Ava Goodnature.

In 1995 Roy and Kathy retired and built their home on Lake Poygan where they had a cottage since 1982, finally living their dream, living full time on the lake. Roy enjoyed restoring old Mercury outboard motors from the 1940's; he had quite a collection. Roy was preceded in death by parents, and a sister, Arlene Achterberg of Janesville, and will be very missed by his family and friends.

A visitation for family and friends will be on Thursday, May 25, 2023, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Mueller Funeral Home 904 E. Main St. Winneconne. A prayer service will be held on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Deacon Paul Vidmar officiating. Interment in the St. Thomas Cemetery, Town of Poygan will be at a later date.
